# Debbie Herrick 2011-12-08 12:05 I was in Libby's choir at Magnolia and in her 1979(?) producion of "Guys and Dolls". I still know the words to the songs today and find myself singing them from time to time. Absolutely one of my fondest high school memories. She was a true professional. How blessed we were to have someone with her passion and talent in our community. So thankful that she chose to share those gifts with us. Reply | Reply with quote | Quote

# Tammy Baker 2011-12-08 15:07 Mike, Jennifer and John, I am so very sorry to hear of Libby's passing. One of my favorite memories is of a trip I made with her to New York when I was a high school senior—we abandoned the rest of the group one afternoon and she took me to St. Pat's, Macy's and the Met after the Christmas show at Radio City Music Hall. She brought so much music to so many; she will be terribly missed. Reply | Reply with quote | Quote

# Linda Parish Hill 2011-12-09 03:33 We are very sorry for your loss, Mike and John. Your mother was one of the great ones of New Martinsville and will be missed very much. I once saw her exiting the movie "101 Dalmations" which she had attended alone, and she remarked to me "I just love a good dog movie." Her love of life, music, family and dogs lives on in memories we share. Reply | Reply with quote | Quote

# David Jolliffe 2011-12-09 07:50 Dear Mike and John,
In my photo album, there's a picture of the All-City Boy's Chorus with me in about fourth grade, and there's your Mom. And, after several more, there's a picture of The King and I in my senior year, and there's your Mom. And every year between the two pictures was filled with such joy, sponsored by your Mom. She'll live in blessed memory.

# Michael Francis 2011-12-09 15:27 David,
I don't imagine I will be able to answer, on an individual basis, all of the kind and generous expressions that have been offered by so many of Libby's former students, both on various f/b pages and on the Grissel site — there have been so many, and it is difficult to know exactly what to say to so many people whom I never knew, but I wanted to say something to you. When I saw the comment that you made the morning after mother died regarding her passing, the terrible sadness I was experiencing at that moment began to abate. Since then, I have been marveling, and I have been gratified at the volume and seeming sincerity of the many kind things that are being said about her. It is obvious to me that my own sentiments regarding Libby were roundly shared by many others: she was the 'sweetest peach on the tree'. Thank you for your moving words.
Michael Francis

# Chuck Herrick 2011-12-09 12:59 What a great lady; conspiring with my mother to get me involved in singing and novice acting! (she personally admitted to this 35 years after the fact!) Her passion for music still motivates me to sing in church, or in the car! All the while, teaching me at a young age, that there was always time for fun after the accomplished task. Libby was a fine lady! Reply | Reply with quote | Quote

# Tracy LeMasters 2011-12-09 13:53 Mrs. Francis had a huge impact on my life. I was in several musicals of hers in the early 80's. "Show Choirs" started to take off then and she was way ahead of the curve. She's a major reason I became a music teacher. She taught me musicianship. It was evident she was passionate about music and sharing her passion with others for generations was such a gift. Her legacy will carry on and touch lives of people she will never know. # jim schaefer, 1961 2011-12-09 16:12 Elizabeth Francis gave me a place to sing during my junior & senior years; sometimes as a bass, or as a baritone; and maybe a tenor, in a pinch. I enjoyed every minute of it even as a music sight reader. I regret that I used what she taught me only a few times after leaving MHS, but she inspired many others to sing and carry on her spirit and excitement about music, and in them who continued to teach or sing, is her spirit and legacy that they carry forward. What a great gift to leave behind for us. Reply | Reply with quote | Quote

Thank you for all of the wonderful memories and theatre families she has created and been a part of. Heaven gained a wonderful new entertainer/dancer/singer/actress/and friend! May her blood, sweat, and tears never leave the stage.

# Mark Lemasters 2011-12-10 01:55 "There's one more angel in heaven, there's one more tear in my eye"

To the Francis family:

Your matriarch is gone in body but is ever so alive in spirit. The countless number of students who enjoyed their time with Libby continue to take the lessons of dedication, perfection, and most importantly her love of music and theater and instill that into new generations.

I had the pleasure to work with her as a student at Magnolia and again as an adult in her post-retirement musical adventures. She never lost that desire to teach and expose a whole new generation to worlds and opportunites that they may have been afraid to see.

Music director, theater director, founder, pioneer—Libby Francis was a gem among the rough. Her presence will be missed, but her legacy will live on.

I want to wish your family peace through this trying time. Rest assured that Libby's flame will burn bright in the legacy that she left here and the community at large.

# Jennifer Francis McNally 2011-12-15 03:31 To all who have taken time to communicate your warm sentiments and notable memories about my grandmother, I thank you. I, of course, knew "Libby" from a very different perspective than most of you — as the matriarch of the paternal side of my family. She offered me an alternative female role model, one who was unafraid to be who she was with boldness and, in doing so, has obviously inspired many people to be a better version of themselves. I take it as the highest compliment when I am told by those who know me well that I am just like her in many ways. How lucky I was to have won the grandmother lottery. I will miss her laughter and her quirky perspectives, but I know that she lives in me and in all of you now. Thank you all.
