McWhorter, Lawrence

McWhorter, Lawrence “Wimp”, age 83, of Grandview Rd., Glen Dale, died Sunday, March 7, 2010 at Wheeling Hospital.
He was born October 8, 1926 on Pine Hill, WV the son of the late Charles Chalmer and Margaret Schell McWhorter.
He was a retired owner and plumber of McWhorter Plumbing and Heating for over 50 years, a WWII U.S. Navy veteran, a member of Glen Dale United Methodist Church, and Earl Francis Post #3 American Legion, a turkey and deer hunter, and an avid golfer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Allen “Red” McWhorter.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Lorraine Baker McWhorter; a daughter, Leslie (Will) McWhorter Blythe of Miamisburg, OH; a son, Larry McWhorter and his partner Joey Killmeyer of Lathrup Village, MI; a brother, Howard McWhorter of Moundsville; two grandchildren, Logan and Lauren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday from 3-5pm and 7-9pm at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 400 Jefferson Avenue, Moundsville.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday at 11am at Glen Dale United Methodist Church, 700 Wheeling Avenue, Glen Dale with Rev. Billy Ray Carpenter officiating.
Entombment in Halcyon Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum where the Moundsville Honor Guard will conduct military services.

Sole, Norma Lee
March 7, 2010

Sole, Norma Lee, age 83, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister, of Third St., Moundsville, WV died Sunday, March 7, 2010 at home.
She was born April 11, 1926 in Littleton, WV the daughter of the late Bernard and Tassie Cumberledge Garrison.
She was a 1944 graduate of Littleton High School; a graduate of Mi Lady School of Cosmetology, Jackson, TN; a retired cook from Marshall County Schools, having worked for 17 years at Sanford and McNinch Elementary Schools; a faithful member of the Church of Christ since her baptism in 1941; and a member of the Hillview Terrace congregation from its beginning in 1965.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six siblings, Madeline McKelvey, Evelyn Menefee, Mabel Garrison, James Garrison, Berle Garrison, and Donald Garrison.
Survivors include her devoted husband of 60 years, Howard C. Sole, whom she married on April 10, 1949; three children, Sara (Richard) Schamp of Moundsville, Howard (Susan) Sole of Sarasota, FL, and Lisa (Eric) Myers of Columbus, OH; eight grandchildren, Brian (Andrea) Schamp of Shadyside, OH, Julie Schamp, and Laura Schamp, both of Morgantown, WV, Howard Curtis (Jennifer) Sole of Concord, NC, Joshua Sole of Rockledge, FL, Jefferson (Julia) Sole of Henderson, TN, Jared Myers, and Chelsea Myers, both of Columbus; three great grandchildren, Howard Brandon, Andrew, and Elissa Sole of Concord; sisters, Irene Layman of Moulton, AL, Clara (William) Edwards of Charleston, WV, and Lois Dennis of Weirton, WV; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8pm at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 400 Jefferson Avenue, Moundsville, and Wednesday from 10am until time of funeral service at 11am at Church of Christ, Hillview Terrace, Eastern 4th St., Moundsville with Evangelist D. Gene West and Evangelist Denver E. Cooper officiating.
Interment in Greenlawn Memorial Park, New Martinsville, WV.

Stewart, Dale Leroy Sr.

Stewart, Dale Leroy, Sr., age 75, of Sardis, OH, died Saturday, March 6, 2010 at his home.
He was born March 5, 1935 in Sardis, the son of the late Harry E. and Mary L. Stewart.
Dale was a retired crane operator from Ormet Corporation and a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, New Martinsville, WV.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Charlotte Louise Stewart; a sister, Betty Kannard; two brothers, Sterling and Leonard Stewart; and a granddaughter, Angela Renee Stewart.
Survivors include two daughters, Cindy Stewart of Sardis and Candy (Willie) Maynard of Toronto, OH; three sons, Dale (Barbara) Stewart Jr. of Shadyside, Rick (Patricia Lyons) Stewart, and Larry (Susie) Stewart all of Sardis; one brother, Richard Stewart of Sardis; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9pm at Grisell Funeral Home, 37234 Mound Street, where funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11am with Pastor Bruce Taylor officiating.

Calvert, Everett Ray, age 79, of New Martinsville, WV, died Friday, March 5, 2010, at his home.
He was born January 15, 1931 in Silver Hill, WV, a son of the late Vance Ranlett and Anna Mae Carney Calvert.
He was a meat salesman for the Independent Dressed Beef Company in Morgantown, WV; a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War; and a Methodist by faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Ruth Lemons Calvert; a daughter, Glenda Calvert Taylor; a grandson, Robert Lee Tennant, Jr.; and a sister, Alvetta Yoho.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ann Calvert; two sons, Rodney Calvert of New Martinsville and Jeffrey Calvert (Shadona Tennant) of Core, WV; two daughters, Karen (Robert) Tennant of Spraggs, PA and Susan Diane Crigler (Tim Ash) of Kingwood, WV; two sisters, Connie (Joe) Rowland of Proctor, WV and Francis (Ron) Burnside of New Martinsville; a brother-in-law, Serbert Yoho of Warren, Ohio; ten grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; three stepsons, Gary (Polly) Hayes and Eric (Estella) Hayes, both of Reader, WV and Jeffrey (Cherri) Hayes of Pine Grove, WV; seven step grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9pm at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 751 Third Street, New Martinsville, where funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 1:00pm with Rev. Russell Whitener officiating.

March 4, 2010

McDougal, Ed, age 63, of Rose St., New Martinsville, died Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at Wheeling Hospital.
He was born November 24, 1946 in Fairmont, WV.
He was a retired employee of Northwood Health Systems; a US Marine veteran, he was a member of Church of the Nazarene, New Martinsville, where he also served as Lay Pastor; and was attending DTM Bible College of Moundsville.
He was preceded in death by his mother Catherine Morris McDougal.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Gray McDougal; two sons, Edward McDougal of Charleston, WV, and Andrew McDougal of Cumberland, MD; two daughters, Patricia (John) Hissom, and Elizabeth Ann (Edward) Burdette both of Charleston, WV; his father, Everet McDougal of New Martinsville; three brothers, Donald (Carol) McDougal of Pine Grove, Bernard (Dorothy) McDougal of Sistersville, and Everette (Valerie) McDougal of Middlebourne; a sister, Brenda (Marvin) Fox of NC, twelve grandchildren, a great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends on Sunday from 12-3 and 6-9pm at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 751 3rd Street, New Martinsville. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11am at the Church of the Nazarene, 400 North Main Street, New Martinsville.

Gehrig, Willis E.
March 4, 2010

Gehrig, Willis E., 95, of Long Ridge Road, Clarington, Ohio, died Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville, WV.
He was born May 22, 1914 in Clarington, a son of the late David Earnest and Anna Catherine Thonen Gehrig.
He was a lifelong farmer; a retired storeroom clerk at Consolidated Aluminum; a U.S. Army utility infantry veteran of WWII; a Purple Heart recipient; a pallbearer for Franklin D. Roosevelt; and a member of the Hannibal United Methodist Church in Hannibal, Ohio.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Dale and John Gehrig; and two sisters, Hazel Myers and Corrine Bott.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Ann Elizabeth Clark Gehrig; four sons, Harry Gehrig, Don Clark (Jean) Gehrig, William David Gehrig and Mark (Mariann) Gehrig, all of Clarington; two daughters, Jo Ann (Bill) Novoa of Mendham, NJ and Barbara (Stephen) Phillips of Stow, Ohio; twelve grandchildren, Christina (Jason) Henthorn, Andrew Novoa, Brian (Billie) Gehrig, Matthew Gehrig, Michael (Andrea) Gehrig, Marka Gehrig, Mitchell (Ali) Novoa, Natalie Gehrig, Jessica (Robert) Hunnell, Gregory (Leanne) Gehrig, Jamison Gehrig and Ryan Gehrig; and two great grandchildren, Jaysa and Joby Henthorn.

March 3, 2010

Williams, Lester L. age 84, of W. Main Street, Paden City died Wednesday, March 3, 2010 in Canterbury Villas Continuous Care Home, Alliance, Ohio.
He was born February 7, 1926 in Uniontown, WV the son of the late Sylvester and Verna Willey Williams.
He was a 1944 graduate of Hundred High School, a retired B-operator at Mobay Chemicals, Founder and President of Kodal-Knob Fork One Room Schools Alumni Association, a member of the Odd Fellows and past member of the Paden City Lions Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Velma Hixenbaugh Williams; two brothers, Archie and Carl; three half brothers, Howard, Ralph, and Ross; two half sisters, Garnett Gorby and Agnes Brookover McDougal.
Survivors include a son, Dr. Roger Williams of Wheeling; a daughter, Shauna Williams-Yoho of Alliance, Oh; three grandchildren, Shyra, Charay, Ciera Yoho and several nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends on Friday from 4-8pm and Saturday from noon until the time of the funeral service at 1pm at Grisell Funeral Home and Crematory, 751 Third St., New Martinsville with Rev. Edward Harnish officiating.

Gould, Robert A. “Shorty”, age 86 of 7th St., Moundsville, WV died Sunday, February 28, 2010 at Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Glen Dale.
He was born July 29, 1923 in Moundsville, the son of the late Charles, Sr. and Maude Mae Magers Gould.
He was a WWII Air Force and Army Veteran; a former employee of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, Mingo Plant; and a member of Moundsville VFW Post #437.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two step-sons, Jerry and William Shimp; and a brother, Charles Gould, Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Sivert Gould; a daughter, Vickie Langford of Moundsville; a step-son, Paul (Sandy) Reed of Barnesville, OH; a sister, Helen Miller of Adena, OH; three granddaughters, Connie Gould (Ron Van Scyoc), Billie Jo Weekly, and Melissa Downing; several great grandchildren including James and Victoria Holland, and Ronald (Dana) Van Scyoc; and several great-great grandchildren.

Cross, Charles “Leroy”, 71, of Robinson Street, New Martinsville, WV, went to be with the Lord, after a very long illness Sunday, February 28, 2010 at Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville.
He was born March 17, 1938 in Pine Grove, WV, a son of the late Cecil and Nellie Hutchison Cross.
Leroy was a retired maintenance worker with the City of Paden City, WV; and a member of the Paden City Church of the Nazarene.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Donald Cross; and a sister, Kay Thomas.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Celesta “Geraldine” Wilson Cross; two sons, Mike (Nancy) Cross and Mark (Misty) Cross, both of New Martinsville; a brother, Derrell (Rosella) Cross of Sevierville, TN; four sisters Evelyn (Mac) McCullough of Paducah, KY, Janna (Floyd) Dennis of New Martinsville, Luella (Bob) Wyatt of Cadiz, KY and Ramona (Earl) of New Martinsville; five grandchildren, Mark (Anglia) Cross, Garrett Cross, Audrey Cross, Heather (Joey) Carroll and Christy (Josh) Fulks; and ten great grandchildren, Kourtney, Kody and Kaylei Carroll, Skylar, Raven and Hunter Fulks, Brandon, Cameron, Ryan and Ethan Cross.

Woods, Opal M., age 90 of Poplar Ave., Moundsville formerly of Jacksonburg, WV died Sunday, February 28, 2010 in Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Glen Dale.
She was born March 28, 1919 in Jacksonburg. Opal was a homemaker and a member of the Church of the Nazarene, Moundsville.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Curtis Yoho and Chloie Kimble Yoho King; her first husband: Russell Miller, her second husband: Harry Bumgardner; one son: Howard W. Wilson; two sisters: Pansy Emptage and Irene Kirkland; one granddaughter: Sherry Nice; two grandsons and a sister-in-law: Betty Yoho.
Survivors include her husband of 25 years, Delbert E. Woods; one son: Willard J. (Judith) Miller of Valparaiso, IN; two daughters: Nila Jean Smith of Weedowee, Alabama and Janet (Bill) Nice of Glen Easton; step-daughter: Karen Adams of PA; three step-sons: Denver Woods of Summersville, WV, Edward and Roger Woods of Richmond, VA; one sister: Louiza Dulaney of Moundsville; one brother: Curtis Yoho of Ft. Briggs, Jay L., age 90 of Cameron, WV died Friday, February 26, 2010 at Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Glen Dale, WV.
He was born March 30, 1919 in Glen Easton, WV the son of the late Talbert and Allie Dobbs Briggs.
He was a retired carpenter with Carpenters Union #0003 with 50 years of service, was a member of the Church of Christ in Cameron, and a well-known wood carver and cabinetmaker.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Briggs, his second wife, Margie Barnes Briggs, three brothers, Earl, Ivan, and Kenneth Briggs, and three sisters, Crystal Rush, Sybil Clifton, and Anna Ruth Blake.
Survivors include three daughters, Bonnie Simmons of Kennwick, WA, Connie (Luke) Shipp of Iran, TX, and Kathy (Sherman) Dye of London, England; a son, John (Lesetta) Briggs of Wind Ridge, PA, nine grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Woodburn, Harold “Woody,” 77, of Tomlinson Avenue, Moundsville, WV died Thursday, February 18, 2010 at Acuity Specialty Hospital, Bellaire, OH.
He was born December 3, 1932 in Moundsville, WV the son of the late Clarence and Loretta Prettyman Woodburn.
He was a retired letter carrier for the Cleveland Postal Service; a U.S. Navy veteran serving in Korea, a member of Temple Baptist Church, a 50-year member of Marshall Union Lodge #8, AF & AM, was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer, and traveler. He was a devoted Elyria High School basketball and Little League East baseball fan, and enjoyed helping others.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Woodburn; two brothers, Clarence and Alfred Woodburn; and a sister Emma Boyd.
Survivors include three sons, Richard (Amy) Woodburn, James Woodburn, and David Woodburn, all of Elyria, OH; two daughters, Tonia Woodburn of Elyria, OH, and Shawna Woodburn of Moundsville, WV; a brother, Alvin (Sarah) Woodburn of FL; two sisters, Alice Menendez of Moundsville, WV, and Edith Burns of NJ; two grandsons Jason and Daniel, two granddaughters, Jasmine and Emerald, two great-grandchildren, Tony and Lilly, and several nieces and nephews.

Chappel, Gilda S., age 57 of Wren Court, Wheeling, WV died Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at home.
She was born August 3, 1952 in Charleston, WV the daughter of Surena Washington of CA, and the late John Chappel.
In addition to her mother, survivors include her fiancé, Jeffrey Soper of Wheeling; a son, Ronald White: a daughter, Ramina White, both of CA; a brother, John Chappel, of CA; three sisters, Teresa Andrews, Sharon McCurn, and Valeda Woods, all of CA; and two grandchildren, Regun and Kahlil White.
Private services and interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

Ebert, Kent Norbert, age 44, of Oil Ridge Road, Sistersville, WV, formerly of New Martinsville, WV, died Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at his home.
He was born April 13, 1965 in New Martinsville.
Kent was a mechanic at Bayer Corporation in New Martinsville; and a member of the First Church of God in New Martinsville.
He was preceded in death by his father, W. Norbert Ebert.
Survivors include his wife, Heather Ebert; a daughter, Alexandria Lindner; and a son, Noah Ebert, both at home; a stepson, Ian Cain of New Martinsville; a sister, Debra (Jeff) Hohn; his mother, Shirley Ebert; niece and nephew, Leandra and Zack Hohn; his father and mother-in-law, Curt and Ida Lindner; a brother-in-law, Curtis Lindner, all of New Martinsville, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was born June 30, 1938 in Chester, WV the daughter of the late Clairel Ruble and Beulah Nixie Robinson Tingler.
She was retired from Wal-Mart; a member of Graysville United Methodist Church; and Graysville UMC Women’s Society.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Juanita Barrett; four sisters, Audrey Tice, Ruth Chambers, Verna Stewart, and Adeline Sandy; and a granddaughter, Angel Lorain Henthorn.
Survivors include her husband of 29 years, Paul Wayne Barrett; two daughters, Debra Kay (Donald) Robinson of Middlebourne, WV, and Terry (Rick) Stillwagoner of Proctor; two sons, Jack (Mag) Henthorn, and Joe (Chrissy) Henthorn, all of Middlebourne; four sisters, Edna (Tom) Flowers of Fresno, CA, Beulah Haunstein of Charlotte, NC, Ruby Konchar, and Vera Crago both of New Cumberland, WV; a brother, Clairel (Eileen) Tingler of Nashville, TN; twelve grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; father-in-law, Paul Barrett of Proctor; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.

Yost, Emily, age 69 of Logan, OH, formerly of New Martinsville, WV died Sunday, February 14, 2010 at Logan Health Care Center.
She was born December 26, 1940 in Morgantown, WV the daughter of the late George and Kathryn Bailey Douglas.
She was a homemaker; a member of New Martinsville United Methodist Church, the church choir, Martha Circle, and O.E.S. #50.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Yost.
Survivors include a daughter, Linita (Cruz) Santos of Columbus, OH; two sons, Jarrod (Andy) Yost of Woodbridge, VA and Jason (Jennifer) Yost of Logan, OH; two brothers Bill (Karen) Douglas of FL, and David (Pat) Douglas of Newark, OH; and six grandchildren, Heather Warren, and Hillary Santos; Andrew, Kaitlyn, Ryan, and Hayley Yost.

Stalder, Juanita V.

She was born November 23, 1927 in Woodsfield, OH.
Juanita was a farm wife who enjoyed quilting, crocheting, sewing and raising calves. She was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ, Sardis.
Juanita was the best mother six farm kids could have hoped for. She supported all of their endeavors and whims, and taught them much.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Margaret and Lewis Young; one brother: Donald Young and her great-granddaughter: Isabella Stalder.
Survivors include her husband, of 61 years, Glen Stalder; three sons: Glen (Brenda) Stalder, Jr. of Beallsville, Nelson (Flora Jean) Stalder of Woodsfield and David (Sherrie) Stalder of Sardis; three daughters: Connie (Joe) Frye of Hannibal, OH, Cindy (Dave) Jamison of Kansas City, MO and Sandy (Bruce) Frey of Phillipsburg, NJ; one brother: Robert (Eleanor) Young of Graysville, OH; one sister: Sue (Mark) Martinka of Pickerington, OH; 16 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9pm at the Grisell Funeral Home, 125 Clarinda Dr., Clarington, OH where funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00am with Rev. Glen Shedlock officiating.
Interment in Zion Memorial Garden, Sardis, OH.

West, Linda Lou

West, Linda Lou, 64, of Meadow Drive, New Martinsville, WV, passed away Friday, February 12, 2010 at her home.
She was born March 15, 1945 in Sistersville, WV.
Linda was a homemaker and a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in New Martinsville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Sadie (Kinney) Phillips.
Survivors include her husband, Friend West; a daughter, Tammy (Chris) Gunn of Paden City, WV; a son, Ed (Missy) West of Sistersville; six grandchildren, Andrew Johnson, Timothy Johnson, Bayli Johnson, Willie West, Jessica West and Kryceia Gunn; and her beloved cat, Smokey.
At her request, there will be no visitation.

Fraker, Marilyn R.
February 11, 2010

Fraker, Marilyn R., age 83, of Northgate Drive, New Martinsville, WV, died Thursday, February 11, 2010, at Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville.
She was born November 22, 1926, in Charter Oak, Iowa, a daughter of Leland and Grace Mains Roose. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Leland Roose, and her sister, Catherine Roose.
Lyn was a founding member and past president of the Wetzel County Humane Society and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in New Martinsville.
It is impossible to talk about Lyn without mentioning her devotion to animals, especially to dogs. She began informally rescuing animals in Northgate more than 50 years ago, sometimes sheltering strays in her garage. Later, as a member of the local humane society, she occasionally rescued dogs from abusive owners by dognapping them in the dead of night.
Lyn was also a prolific baker whose specialties included elegant Danish pastries and less elegant but even more delicious banana cakes and fruit pies made from scratch.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Joseph E. Fraker, Jr.; two sons, Thomas Fraker of Arlington, VA and Paul Fraker of Lovettsville, VA; two daughters, Susan Fraker of New York, NY, and Ann Fraker, MD of Stevenson, Maryland; seven grandchildren, and her beloved schnauzer Arthur.
Family will receive friends at their home on Sunday from 4-8pm.
Funeral services will be on Monday at 11:00am at the First Presbyterian Church, 59 E. Benjamin Drive, New Martinsville, with Pastor David Roberts officiating.
Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, New Martinsville.

Westbrook, Rosemary E. "Rosie"

Westbrook, Rosemary E., “Rosie”, 62, of Bridge Street, New Martinsville, WV, died Thursday, February 11, 2010 at Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, WV.
She was born November 6, 1947 in New Martinsville, a daughter of the late Phillip and Betty Potts Longwell.
Rosie was a member of the Church of the Nazarene; and the Eagles Auxiliary in Paden City, WV.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles O. Westbrook.
Survivors include five sisters, Lavina “Sissy Mae” (Jim) Kiger of Hannibal, Ohio, Linda (Terry) Quinn of New Martinsville, Mildred (George) Green of Beallsville, Ohio, Donna (Clyde) Mason of Steubenville, Ohio, and Iona Beegle (Don Thorne) of New Martinsville; two brothers, Kent (Ramona) Longwell of Sardis, Ohio and Ray (Jeanie Dawson) Longwell of New Martinsville; several nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends on Monday from 4:00pm until time of funeral service at 7:00pm at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 751 Third Street, New Martinsville, with Jim Green officiating.
