Evelyn L Kovalick, 65-year resident of Glen Dale passed away November 12th at age 89 of complications from dementia. Evelyn was born in Mozart and attended Wheeling High School where she was a Majorette and one of the first women to ever run for student government. She excelled at academics and graduated from Wooster and Bethany colleges and obtained a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Utah. She married the love of her life at age 20 and she and George Kovalick, of Ohio Valley coaching fame, formed a partnership that went on to produce many championships, 4 sons, 9 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. George preceded her in death in 1984. She was also preceded by her siblings, Walter Harbert of Henderson NV, Iris Steele of San Diego CA, Jerry Harbert of Moundsville and her parents Isabelle Hickman and Bryan Harbert. Evelyn was a lifelong educator, science teacher, and media coordinator who had a long and distinguished career with Ohio County Schools. She was a strong and independent woman in an era where that wasn’t common. She held several positions of responsibility including Supervisor of Library / Media, Coordinator of Science, Coordinator of Teacher Training Programs, and the Teacher Expectation Student Achievement program (TESA). She earned the Edgar Dale Award for Excellence in Educational Media. She was an adjunct instructor for Wheeling College and started her career as a chemistry teacher at Moundsville High School. She was a member of 10 professional associations including the National Science Teachers Association and the West Virginia Science Teachers Association and held 7 Certifications / Credentials. After retiring from public school service in 1989 she started a second career with AIMS – Activities that Integrate Math and Science and traveled the country training teachers to make their science programs more interesting and exciting for their students. She also traveled to China as part of an international educational outreach program. She is survived by her four sons and their families including: George Kovalick Jr. of Las Vegas NV, Dr. Mike & Susan Kovalick of Bethlehem, Will and Becky Kovalick of Glen Dale and Joe and Lu Kovalick of Oakley CA. Grandchildren include Matt Kovalick, Will Kovalick, Kristina Davis, Jessica Steele, Bryan Kovalick, Alex Kovalick-Mills, Katie Kovalick, Evan Kovalick, Karyn Kovalick and Great Granddaughters Leah Steele and Emerson Davis. Family will receive friends on Saturday, November 20th from 10am until the time of the Funeral Service at 11am at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 1 Ridgecrest Rd. Bethlehem/Wheeling, WV. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling, WV. Memorial contributions may be made to: Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org.
