    Wendell Wilke Jones

    February 8, 1941 - January 19, 2022

Wendell Wilke Jones passed away on January 19, 2022 at Reynolds-WVU Hospital in GlenDale WV. He was 80 years of age and caring for his gardens and back yard birds until his recent cardiac issues. Wendell was born February 8, 1941 to Wilda (Dumire) and Theodore Jones in GlenDale WV. He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife of 56 years, Mary Lynn, and his brothers Robert and Elwood. He is survived by 2 sons, Chris (Gina) Jones of Maryville TN, Wendell Jr. “Butch” (Lori) Jones of Waterford OH; 1 daughter Jennifer Jones of Lynchburg VA; 3 grandsons; Baron Fortune of Charlottesville VA, and Isaac and Aiden Jones of Waterford OH; 3 granddaughters; Emily (Justin) Nichols of Knoxville TN, Elise Jones of Columbus OH, and Edan Jones of Columbus OH; 3 sisters; Ivette (Gerald) Patrick of Moundsville WV, Thelma (Dennis) Minor of Moundsville WV, and Ella (David) Schoenian of GlenDale WV; and 1 sister-in law; Patty Jones (Elwood). Wendell attended Moundsville High School graduating in 1959. He then joined the US Navy where he saw active duty as a Boilerman 1st Class on the Destroyer USS Robert A. Owens from 1959 to 1961. Upon return after serving his military commitment, Wendell landed a job at PPG Industries in Natrium WV where he worked as a pipefitter, electrician, and brine well operator before retiring in 2005 after 40+ years on the job. He particularly loved getting together with other PPG retirees at Bob’s Lunch in Moundsville every Wednesday morning. Wendell was avid sports fan and loved his Mountaineers, Pirates and Steelers. Rarely did he miss a game and it was known not to phone him during games as he was quite distracted. He spent much of his retirement years travelling with his wife and his Uni-Globe friends to all but two Major League Baseball stadiums. Wendell was very supportive of his children’s activities as a Moundsville Youth Baseball coach (FOP), and Scoutmaster/Asst. Scoutmaster for Moundsville Troop 79 for many years. He was probably best known in Boy Scouts for his “rise and shine” tactics singing “You are My Sunshine” until all had awaken on camping trips and at Summer camps. In his later years he found great enjoyment watching his grandhildren’s sporting events. Wendell would do anything for his family and friends immediately stopping what he was doing to help someone in need. He was a kind-hearted soul that will sorely be missed. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 2-4PM and 6-8PM at the Grisell Funeral Home and Crematory, 400 Jefferson Ave., Moundsville where funeral services will be held on Sunday at 1:00PM with Reverend Hubbs officiating. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family at Riverview Cemetary, Moundsville.
