John William Barcus, 70, of New Martinsville, West Virginia went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 13th, surrounded by those that he loved. He was born to parents Paul and Helen Barcus, on March 15, 1952, in New Martinsville, WV. John graduated from Magnolia High School in 1970 and briefly attended West Virginia University before returning home to help with the family business of Barcus Transfer. After the family business closed, he worked at Witschey’s Market for a period of time before taking a job at what was then Mobay. He worked in the Polyol Department as a B-Technician for thirty-five years until he retired in 2012. John is survived by the love of his life, Patty Gaye Cochran Barcus, whom he was married to for forty-eight years. John is also survived by his two daughters, which are Heather Barcus Norton and her husband, Patrick, of Paden City and his youngest daughter, Stacy of New Martinsville. John’s life was blessed by his two grandsons, Alex and Jacob Norton of Paden City, that called him Pap. He is also survived by his brother Dr. Paul Barcus Jr. and his wife Lynn Barcus of New Martinsville: his brother-in-law, Lloyd Arnold Cochran, and his wife Debbie of New Martinsville; sister-in-law Idell Akers and her husband Roy Akers of New Martinsville. He loved his nephews and nieces as if they were his own, and they are Trey Barcus and his children Emerson, Tanner, and C.J, Todd Barcus and his wife Angie and their children Halle and Lindsey, Jill Barcus Hall and her husband, Jamie Hall and their children Ava, Kate, and Lucas, Nick Cochran and his wife Marj, Amanda Cochran Lanza and her husband Joe, Tyler Akers, and Will Akers. John’s life was blessed immensely with all his cousins and beloved friends as well. John was preceded in death by his father, Paul Barcus Sr., his mother, Helen Witschey Barcus, his father-in-law, Lloyd Cochran, his mother-in-law/second mother, Lottie Gaye Thomas Cochran, and many beloved uncles, aunts, and cousins. John was a volunteer firefighter in his youth, and he was an active member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), where he had served as a deacon and property chairman. Due to his love of nature and hunting, John was a life-long member of the Lewis Wetzel Chapter and national chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge #931. Beyond his family and friends, church, and the outdoors, John’s great love was for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he loved them win or lose. Lastly, John never met a stranger and no matter where he was, and he found someone to talk to about something or nothing at all. The Barcus family would like to thank all of those that have prayed, reached out, and visited during the past year of John’s illnesses. The family would like to send a special thank you to the MICU and SICU units at Ruby Memorial Hospital, and the Genesis Health Care Center for the care that they have provided to John over the past year. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask for donations to be made to either the First Christian Church or New Martinsville Public Library. Family and friends are invited to come celebrate and honor John’s life on Monday, December 19th from 1-4 pm and 6-8 pm at Grisell Funeral Home, 751 Third Street, New Martinsville, WV, where a memorial service will be at 11 am on Tuesday, December 20th, with Pastor Sarah Webb officiating.
